History

Throughout its long history it has had several uses. The earliest was probably as a pilgrims hostel -it is on the route St. Francis took from Assisi to La Verna- hence the three large dormitories.

Ospedale was the name for these hostels and there are several along the route. The walls have some Roman bricks and travertine and a former Medievale road forms part of the property.

In 1640 the local prince, Pompeo del Monte, funded it as a school or orphanage and at the same time he restored the nearby small monastery founded by St. Francis, Eremo di Bon Riposo.

In early 1800s Napoleon is reputed to have made the house his field hospital. The local records show that in 1850 it was used as a
farmhouse while the land was a farm.

It was abandoned after the war and deteriorated until the owner bought it in 1988. The house is not let intensively.

AN OASIS OF PEACE

We had a wonderful time in Umbria and Tuscany with our family. Daniela is an excellent host and the pasta cooking class with the delicious dinner was amazing. Daniela really knows her way in the region and can suggest many fun and delicious acivities to do around there. Everything in the house was exactly as pictured and the pool was great. The property is in the countryside and surroundings are very beautiful and calm, yet not far from special destinations in Umbria and Tuscany. Ideal for a family gateway. Thank you for the great experiences!
